Local Landmark Listed On National Registry
|
The Henry Cemetery located just south of Reger on highway Z was officially listed December 28, 2005 on the National Registry of Historic Sites. This cemetery is believed to be the oldest in the county with the first burial having been in 1841.
Glenda Richey, a former resident of Sullivan County acting as Historian for The Board For The Friends Of The Henry Cemetery, with the support and help of the board members did the research and submitted the documentation to the State Historical Preservation Office.
This action will provide some Federal Protection for the cemetery should the proposed rock quarry that would surround the cemetery on three sides resurface in the future.
Thanks Glenda, and the Board For The Friends Of The Henry Cemetery for your efforts. |

KEITH MONTGOMERY, MUSICIAN AND VOCALIST WITH THE LONDON SYMPHONY CHORUS TO VISIT SULLIVAN COUNTY.
Reception To Be Held July 9
By Liz Sterling
Keith Montgomery of London, England, an accomplished musician and bass vocalist with the London Symphony Chorus, great, great, great grandson of one of Sullivan County's earliest families, John and Mary Polly Shatto Montgomery will be visiting Sullivan County this week. While on a three week genealogy visit to the United States, Montgomery is travelling with his sister Susan Montgomery Ferney of Spokane a retired mathematics teacher, and their Aunt, Glennys Montgomery Carlile of Walla Walla, Washington. Mrs Carlile and husband owned and operated Total Office Concepts, Inc. before retiring several years ago. Their son now operates the business. The trio began their journey in Nebraska where Lucky Montgomery, John's son and Keith and Susan's, great, great grandfather homesteaded in 1864 when he left Sullivan County shortly after the Civil War. Stopping in Concordia, Kansas for some research on the maternal line of the family before coming to Sullivan County. While here, cousins Liz and Bill Sterling will give them a tour of Montgomery and related family sites and cemeteries, both west and north of Milan. John and several of his siblings came to what would become Sullivan County in the late 1830's. These siblings parents were Isaac and Ruth Hargrove Montgomery who remained in Ohio. Families that tie into the lines of their children include many well known Sullivan County names of which a partial list follows. Beall, Tipton, Caldwell, Callihan, Cochran, Hurlbut, Vaughn, Coffman, Law, Sterling, Wilhite, Boyd, Glidewell, Baldridge, Summerville, Coin, McDuff, Morrison, Smith, Watt, Weaver, Kain, Johnson, Harmon, Grim, Campbell, Custer, Deeds, Marley, May, Reed, McClasky, McKee, Riggins, DeRyke, Sears, Eddy, Mewmaw, Swiggart, Withrow, and Richardson. As with all early settlers, the roots go deep and spread far. They no doubt touch your family roots someplace. Sterling has prepared a Montgomery Family Chart that begins with John's father Isaac. This chart, measuring 60+ feet long and 2 feet high and will be on display at the reception and shows the connection to all the families mentioned above. John and Polly arrived in this area (that later became Sullivan County) by wagon train in the 1830's along with a number of the early settlers. John, the first carpenter in the area, built a two story log cabin that still stands today as testimony to his carpentry skill. This cabin is one of the sites Keith and family will be visiting with the Sterlings. This historic log cabin was the impetus for the Sterlings to form a non-profit corporation; Historic Sites and Documents Preservation, Inc. That corporation will be hosting a reception for Keith, Susan and Glennys on Saturday, July 9, 2005 from 2:00 to 4:30 pm at the Milan Rebekah's Lodge on Business 5 and C at the south end of town. All family and friends are invited to come and meet this Montgomery family. For those interested there will be a no-host order from the menu lunch at the Corner Junction Cafe at 12 noon preceding the reception. Historic Sites and Documents Preservation, Inc. will be accepting orders for memorial bricks to be placed at the Montgomery Log Cabin when it is relocated. Proceeds from the bricks will go the purchase and relocation of the Log Cabin. Of course all donations for this project would be greatly appreciated and recognized upon completion of the project. Bricks will range from $50.00 each with 2 lines of print containing 16 characters each line. (Spaces count as characters). Larger donations will be recognized by different size bricks, plaques, etc. For more information concerning the Montgomery Log Cabin Project, or the reception call 660-445-2034 or email Bill@HSDPInc.com |
